July 5
This morning after breakfast we started out for Whittenberg with visits to the “Stadt Kirche” with its impressive altar containing
scene from the Reformation painted by Lucas Cranach.
We also visited the Castle Church where
Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the church door.
While the original door was destroyed it has been replaced with a
beautiful bronze replica. Luther’s tomb
is inside the church. We visited the Latin School and had a minister tell us about the history of the school and about it currently.
After lunch
we visited the house where Luther
lived with Augustinian monks, and after the Reformation lived there with his
wife and six children. This building
houses the largest collection of Reformation artifacts in the world.
In our free time some of us went back to the Stadt Kirche for a service in English and then enjoyed watching a group from Korea sing Amazing Grace, Ode to Joy and Jesus Loves Me accompanied by Korean instruments.
For dinner we stopped at a restaurant with the mining theme and the chef entertained us with stories of the miners.
We then wen to Erfurt and checked into in the Augustinian Monestary.
